T640 Extra Fan Requirements - Tech Help Blog
21st Mar 2022
The T640 in a standard configuration comes with 2 rear mounted fans, however there are certain configurations that will require an additional fan assembly and fans. The reason for this is certain components run much hotter than others leading to potential overheating if not properly cooled. The following image shows the additional fan locations.
The following type of cards and layouts will require the additional front fan assembly.
- NVMe/PCIe SSDs
- Mellanox CX4 DP 100Gb QSFP NIC
- Mellanox CX4 DP 100Gb NIC
- Mellanox CX4 SP 100Gb NIC
- Mellanox DP 40Gb QSFP NIC
- Intel QP 10Gb Base-T NIC
- Solarflare Sunspot DP 10Gb NIC
- Solarflare Nova DP 10Gb NIC
- Qlogic DP 10Gb V1 NIC
- 3.5In 18 bay chassis
Along with these configurations that require the front fan assembly there are also additional requirements if you’re going to be running GPUs in the system which are as follows.
In the front fan assembly there are standard fans and “high performance fans” GPU configurations will require the high performance fan models in addition there are also two external fans that mount on the rear of the chassis behind the PCIe slots giving further cooling to the system when GPUs are in use.
If you attempt to run GPUs without the high performance fans in the front fan assembly or the rear fans you will get missing fan errors along with the fans being stuck at 100% RPM.
