Rebranding Dell Servers Back To Dell - Tech Help Blog

7th Apr 2022

Dell sometimes sells their servers to other OEMs and they will put different branding and model numbers in as opposed to the standard Dell naming and branding. There is however is a process to convert the branding back to Dell using the iDrac and an id module file.

  • First to download the id module you will need to go to Dell’s support page https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/ and search for the OEMR version of the Dell server you’re wanting to rebrand. If you’re looking to rebrand an R630 search for R630 in the search box and you will find there are some results with names like OEMR R630.

  • Once you’re at the support page for the OEM version of the server go to the drivers and downloads page and in the category search box scroll down to identity module.
  • Once at the id module section there will usually just be one result with a name like Dell OEMR R630 Identity Module, expand out the file and go to the “view full driver details” link at the bottom.

  • Once in the view full drivers details page you will want to find the download with the name CustBSU in the file name and not just Cust.

  • Once downloaded you will get an exe file you will need to run on your computer that will extract a .pm file.
  • Once you have the pm file on your computer you will connect to the idrac of the server you want to rebrand, if you haven’t configured your idrac you can configure it in the f2 menu in POST. Once you have the ip configuration for the idrac connect to the IP using a web browser on the same network. The default credentials will be username:root password:calvin
  • Once logged in to the idrac you will go to the update section and once there you will see an option to browse your computer for a file to update the system. Point it at the .pm file that you’ve downloaded from the Dell support page and go through the steps of hitting next and eventually you will be prompted to accept the update and it will ask if you want to go to the jobs queue. Once in the jobs queue wait for the job to change to completed.

  • Once the job is completed you will go to the troubleshooting part of the idrac and you will want to select reset idrac settings to default and let it run the command, it will take several minutes for this process to complete.
  • Once the reset of the idrac is complete reboot your server and as it’s going through the POST process you will get a message about rebranding in process at the end. Once this completes and the server reboots again you should have Dell logo’s and model numbers on the system again as opposed to the off brand information.
